The Community of Thorburn is one of Airdrie’s more established communities. Thorburn is located just North of Meadowbrook, on Airdrie’s Southeast quadrant, and just east of Big Springs. East Lake Blvd runs North to South along the West boundary of Thorburn. On the North side there is East Lake, and to the East lies Rockyview County.
The first homes in Thorburn were built in the early 1980’s, and specifically in 1981 and continued through the next thirty years. The North-easterly areas of Tanner and Thornfield have many new homes which were constructed between 2000 and 2010.
Thorburn has many desirable amenities. At the entrance to Thorburn Drive at East Lake Blvd, there is a small strip mall with an Esso Gas Station and numerous small convenience stores such as a liquor store.
At 1128 Thorburn Drive SE, Airdrie, AB, there is a Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall. Very nearby is the Meadowbrook Middle School in Airdrie (Grades 5 to 8 ) is located at 1796 Meadowbrook Drive S.E.
Thorburn is also home to the Good Shepherd Separate School which is run by the Calgary Separate School District. The Good Shepherd School is located at 1319 Thorburn Drive SE.
The Good Shepherd School opened on August 27, 2009 in Thorburn. It is currently a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school. The $11.9 million facility has a core capacity of 300 Kindergarten to Grade 6 students and the capability to expand to 700 in the future through the addition of modular classrooms.
Thorburn is also situated very nearby good transportation routes, and has easy access to the Trans-Canada Highway, Wal-Mart, and big-box grocery stores in Airdrie.
