The Lougheed House has become one of Calgary’s most well known and beautiful homes from our past.  I have a bit of personal experience with the Lougheed House because when I was just eight years old, my pal Danny O’Keefe brought me there after school. Danny was a small boy, and had is hair cut Mohican  style, so he was quite an interesting picture.  His Dad was the maintenance man there, and the position provided for a tiny suite in the lower quarters on the south side.  I still remember the amazement that one of my friends would be living in this awesome home.

Lougheed House

The sandstone Lougheed House is located at 707 13th Avenue SW. Calgary. It is open for viewing 11 to Friday from 11 AM to 4 PM and weekends from 10 AM to 4 PM.   Best give them a call at 403-204-6333 before showing up just in case this changes.

The Lougheed House is name after its original owner, the Senator James Alexander Lougheed, and his wife Lady Isabella, along with their two children in 1891. At that time, the location was Southwest of Calgary in the bald prairie, although today the community is known as Connaught.

The home has been used by the Canadian Red Cross as a collection centre for their blood bank.   In 2005, Lougheed House was declared a public Heritage Centre and is beautifully restored.

Lougheed House

The Lougheed House still sits on its original 2.8 Acre Estate Grounds. To the North is the infamous Ranchman Club and the new Calla Condominium Project is just breaking ground Southeast of the site (October 3, 2011).

In case you are wondering what is happening on the Peace Bridge Construction in Calgary here is a photo I  captured on October 1st, 2011.   The Peace Bridge is located in Eau Claire, which is on the South Side of the Bow River at approximately 7th Street SW and 1st Avenue.   The Peace Bridge is a pedestrian crossing which our Calgary City Council received an incredible backlash from residents of the City of Calgary.  The design was handed out to a Non-Canadian architect, Santiago Calatrava who’s principal office is in Zurich, Switzerland for nearly $4 million dollars, without having even tendered it to Canadian Architects. The Peace Bridge was tendered under the leadership of Mayor Dave Bronconnier.

Peace Bridge Calgary

The Peace Bridge construction cost is estimated over $25 million dollars when it is completed.  The Peace Bridge will service the communities of Eau Clair on the south, and  Sunnyside on the North Side of the Bow River. Both Communities are represented by long time friend and Bronconnier supporter Druh Farrell.  The Peace Bridge  is far behind schedule, due to many problems during construction, and having to order replacement parts with long delivery times from overseas.

Peace Bridge Calgary

While the Peace Bridge, demonstrates a fine example of world class architecture, the long term benefit to the average Calgarian remains to be seen.
